Crag features

The Churfirsten are a chain of several tooth-like peaks above the Walensee, of which Hinterugg is the highest at 2306m. Many of the peaks have long alpine rock routes on their south faces or on their flanks, a few of the better protected examples of which are included in "Plaisir Ost". A Conversely, the summits can generally be reached from the north by straightforward walks, while crossing points between the peaks are afforded by the exposed south-side scrambles up to Gocht and Palisnideri. The easier crossings at the eastern end at Valsloch and Nideri can be combined as a full day round trip and the traverse of the peaks (east to west seems most common) appears to be an epic challenge.

Approach notes

At the west end of the chain, the town of Arvenbüel can be reached by bus or car, giving access to peaks from the north side, e.g. Hinter Leistchamm.

From the east end of the chain a bus can be taken as far as the REHA clinic at Walenstadtberg, and one can go further with a car to the Hotel at Rugg (and even a bit further up the hillside on a poorer track). The way to Gocht and Palis Nideri are accessed from here.

Another possibility at the east end for cars is the steep road up to Lüsis, e.g. for the way to Nideri.

On the north side a cable car from Unterwasser goes to near the summit of Chäserrugg, leaving a gentle and beautiful 30 minute walk to the Tristencholben crag. A cable car also goes from Alt St. Johan to Alp Sellamatt.
