Mount Teide (Spanish: Pico del Teide) is a volcano on Tenerife. It is 3.718 m summit is the highest point in Spain.

If measured from the ocean floor, it is at 7.500 m the highest volcano in the world base-to-peak outside of the Hawaiian Islands, and is described by UNESCO and NASA as Earth's third-tallest volcanic structure. Teide's elevation makes Tenerife the tenth highest island in the world. Teide is an active volcano: its most recent eruption occurred in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the north-western Santiago rift. The United Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation designated Teide a “Decade Volcano”.

Approach notes

You can take the cable car or one of the many trails up to the summit.

Restricted Access

Access to the summit itself is restricted. For the trail (Sendero) No 10, which leads up the last 200 m to the summit, a free permit is required and is checked for.
Numbers are normally restricted to 200 per day. Due to the limititation, please reserve your permit (especially during high season) 6 to 8 weeks in advance.


If staying in the Altavista hut you don't need a permit, but you must have left the trail by 9 am.
Alternatively wait until the rangers take the last cable car down. (16:50 pm resp. 18:50 pm).
