Altitude 128m a.s.l
Also known as Shangri La. A crag undergoing development close to Ao Nang.
A bike or car will be required for the drive and approach shoes are advised for the approach (not essential but you will be thankful!).
Newly developed. Accessed via a trail which starts through a rubber plantation just North of Ao Nang.
The approach drive takes about 15 minutes and the walk about 20 or 30 minutes depending on how good your route finding is.
From Ao Nang main beach, follow the road NW to the street food Vendors and turn right. Go past the Pakasai resort and keep going until the junction. Go straight on for about 500m then turn left on a road signposted Natin Klong Son. Follow this road for about 2km then turn left where the mountain is on your left. (Google Earth shows this well). Follow this road past an elephant trekking setup and over a concrete bridge. Take the first available left turn after the concrete bridge. Follow this road for about 200m to a sharp right turn and park appropriately. There is a big blue sign about brown rice. Lat/ Long 8.0687956 98.7976405.
From the parking head South along a footpath keeping the concrete house on your left and the Krabi Villa Company driveway on your right. Follow this track as it bends leftwards, go over a very noisy metal bridge and follow the path though the palm plantation. From here the path goes up the hillside through the jungle. It is easy to loose your way but the path should have fixed ropes up some steep sections. If the path vanishes, go back to where you left it and look harder. As the path levels out after the fixed ropes, the crag will be up on your left. The point at which to break trail is hard to find. A small piece of red ribbon (there are several pieces of red ribbon along the trail to add to the confusion) next to a 10 foot burnt looking tree stump marks the point. If you miss this, keep following the path until you get to the huge cave (take a head torch to explore). This is about 100m beyond the point where you should've broken trail.
After breaking trail, scramble over boulders and up some easy angled rock with care. The fixed ropes that used to protect this have been cut. Traverse around leftwards and you will be at the right hand side of the crag.
|If you're in the Krabi area and interested in checking out this new crag let me know and I will put you in touch with someone who will show you where it is. It's currently hard to find and involves some jungle-bashing to access the routes.|
