Canigou at dawn from the Refuge des Cortalets © Dan Bailey

Crag features

An iconic mountain of Catalunya, Canigou stands at the east end of the main chain of the high Pyreneees. The closest big peak to the Mediterranean coast, it's well worth an ascent.

Three walker's routes are available:

- the standard route on the north ridge (invariably busy)

- the alternative northern approach via Crete du Barbet (quiet and scenic)

- the southern approach via the Plans de Cadi (gorgeous woods, not usually busy)

The Barbet and Cadi trails join up for the final ascent of the summit crags via the short but enjoyable scramble of La Cheminee (grade 2); the standard north ridge route involves no scrambling.

The climbing on the Barbet Face and the East Face of Canigou is excellent.  Long bolted mountain routes, well equiped and maintained by the Guardian of the Refuge Cortalet (Th0mas Dulac) .  topos available in the refuge and on the refuge's website https://refugedescortalets.ffcam.fr/escalade.html

Approach notes

Canigou can be climbed in a day, but note the (expensive) 4WD service to the refuge is no longer available. It's big enough to justify an overnight trip.

There are two manned huts: Refuge des Cortalets (for the northern route and for the climbs on the east face) and the Refuge de Mariailles (for the southern route).
