The Pirin mountains, now a UNESCO world heritage site, are characterised by many limestone peaks, alpine streams and lakes. The Pirin Mountain (Vihren Peak at 2914m) is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria and the third highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula. Many alpine style trad routes can be found within the National Park.
