Crag features

Not actually on Millstone Rigg, these beautifully pocketed and sculpted moorland grit boulders in a fantastic setting above the village of Egglestone and overlooking Teesdale are named after the nearest mapped feature. The quick drying rock is clean and mostly lichen free. Landings are generally excellent. This CROW accesible venue is a lovely place to while away an hour or two. You will likely need to be a fan of the sit start to get the most out of a visit here i.e. none of it is very tall.

It was developed by Carol and Alan Dougherty in the summer of 2005. A visit in July 2016 by Laura and Simon Huthwaite led to an update which has been added.

Approach notes

Leave Eggleston northwards along the B6278 signed for Stanhope. A handy layby on the left a couple of hundred yards after the cattle grid is a good place to leave the car. A sheep pen can just be seen another 200 yards along the road and just beyond these is a line of well built grouse butts heading steeply uphill. Once you reach butt 7 you can strike across the moor towards the obvious pinnacle which makes a good spot to dump gear and assess your options. This approach takes about 25 minutes.

Alternative approach is to walk all the way to the summit of Millstone Rigg, past the shooting hut and then follow the next set of grouse butts down to the crag.
