Crag features

Snøhetta is the highest mountain in the Dovrefjell mountain range and is situated inside the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park.

The peaks of Vesttoppen (The West Top) and Stortoppen (The Large/ Big Top) are easily accessible by hiking or skiing. Stortoppen to Midttoppen is easily accessible. Traversing from Midttoppen, via Hettpiggen to Vesttoppen requires climbing with a rope with one main crux pitch at Vesttoppen. Much of the route can be simul-climbed with a 60m rope. An abseil is required when conducting the traverse in either direction. Half ropes make this and the climbing section much easier, but of course add weight.

On Stortoppen there is a radio station, originally used by the Norwegian Army. In good conditions, in summer and winter, the ascents are relatively easy with Stortoppen and Vesttoppen being popular places for ski touring (Ideal for beginners). DNT-cabins are available at Reinheim, Snøheim and Åmotdalshytta.

The name Snøhetta is derived from the combination of the words snø 'snow' and hette 'hood', giving the name; 'the mountain with a hood of snow'.

Approach notes

There is a bus service from Hjerkin at the fjellstue there (former Norwegian army camp). Cost is 60kr as of 2016. No vehicle access is allowed from Hjerkin to Snøheim.

Camping is available at Snøheim as are rooms plus catering. There is also a bar.

The approach from Snøhetta requires easy walking and an ascent through a large boulder field to the summit. This is not difficult but care must be taken if wet.
