New Lines on a new Crag in Swindale, Cumbria. Dog Crag (NY 511 125). © Route Adjuster

Crag features

A pleasant little crag with a fantastic view of the upper part of the Swindale valley, a beautiful place to spend a few hours. The rock is sound and surprisingly clean for a new crag and a little bit of traffic will help improve this further.  There is some evidence of previous visits (couple of rusty pegs) but no trace of claimed routes has been found. The routes described here have been added in a couple of visits in May 2017, one or two more lines are possible for the brave!

Well worth a visit if you're in the area, only a 10 minute longer walk in than Gouther Crag.

Approach notes

Park and approach as for Gouther Crag. After crossing the footbridge and passing through the narrow swing gate, take the low path along the valley floor and follow paths through the woodland (avoiding the wet areas) until you emerge at the far side by passing through a gate in the deer-fence. At this point ascend the hillside directly on your left for 50m until the crag can be seen on your left a futher 50m back towards Gouther Crag.

Direct approaches can be made through the woods but be aware that there may be one or more deer fences or walls that will have to be negotiated, much easier to go around as describe above.

No Access Issues

No known access issues - please read approach notes and avoid taking a direct approach to the crag to avoid damage to fences or walls.
