With some unique (for the Mournes) exfoliated granite features on the summit crag and one of the oldest naturally propagated forest in the mournes; Altataggart finds itself amoung a great cluster of bouldering and trad venues in the western Mournes that are easily acessible for a short visit or as part of a day link-up with Pierces Castle. Park in Leitrim Lodge carpark at the base of Altataggart. Walk the main track east from the carpark up to the fjord crossing that breaks right from the first left hand corner. After crossing, follow the boundary wall (eventually on the right side) to the top of the treeline, follow treeline to summit crag on the West side which is situated on the treeline edge. You will pass preist's hill bouldering wall about 1/2 way to the summit crag.
Approach time: 30-40mins lovely walk through the forest!
Gates must be kept closed and dogs must be kept on leashes as land is actively used by local farmers for livestock
