The Mountain Shadows Crag is a newly re-discovered cliff above the Rockabout mountain bike trail near Stacey Creek on the lower western flanks of Mount 7. The rock is composed of solid quartzite with a few sections of scruffier rock so helmets are recommended!
There are three main zones; the Orange Wall, the Grey Wall and the Timelines area with potential for lots more development. All climbs have equalized fixed anchors, to keep wear down on the anchors please don’t top-rope directly through the chains. The walls face NW-SW so the Timelines & Grey Wall get midday sun and the Orange Wall stays shady until the evening.
The insects can be vicious, especially when the sun goes down. Consider yourself warned. Please be courteous around the Cedar House guest houses & parking and pack out all garbage.
Approach notes
Head South of town on Highway 95 and turn left on Almberg Rd(4.8 km from Rona Hardware). Follow Almberg for 1.2 km and turn left at Hefti rd at top of big hill. Follow Hefti for 200m to a culdesac. Park here on the right and take care not to block any driveways or interfere with the Cedar House access at all. You’re heading for the top side/northwest corner of the Rockabout mountain bike trail. Continue on foot along a gravel road straight past the Cedar House to the Cedar House trailhead on your right. This trail crosses under powerlines and enters the forest following a wide hiking/biking trail. Take the next trail left, towards the Rockabout Loop and descend to cross Stacey Creek, 150m past the creek turn right onto the old overgrown road. Stay on this rd for approx. 650m passing the south access to the Rockabout bike trail on your right. Take the next (2nd) signed entrance to the Rockabout trail on your right and follow this for 150m until you can pick up a faint trail uphill, follow this until the bike trail is reached. Go left for 10-15m and look for the trail uphill to the crag.
