Crag features

La Dent de Man is a prominent crag situated at the top of a hill overlooking the city of Man and is visible from everywhere in the city. There is an established tourist route to the top of the crag, which should be used for access. It is best to use local guides for this and it currently involves paying a small fee to the villagers at the start of the path.

Like the majority of rock in the area, the crag is made of granite. The only known route up it is Insomnie, a trad route leaned and climbed in January 2019 as part of Project Cote d'Ivoire. There is a lot of potential for further development. The very steep main faces and the huge nose arete are very compact and yield no protection but are featured enough for holds, so sport climbing would be possible. The only signs of anyone else having inspected the faces are a peg on the half way ledge and a caving spit at the top. We were informed that the military has abseilled down it but we have found neither evidence nor record of any other climbing having occurred.

The west face stays in shade until around 1pm. The south face was too hot to be on at any time of day when we visited. You have to be prepared to carry a *lot* of water and head up at or before first light, as the heat is unrelenting.

There are several independent faces that can be accessed on the way up La Dent. At some point the path meets a crag with several obvious lines. More can be found past the end of this buttress but a machete is heavily recommended.

We have captured a lot of footage and photographs of the crag, so any party interested in visiting and developing the area further should get in touch.

Access Advice

Access to tourists is allowed but a local guide should be used. At the time when we visited, a visit to the village chief and a small per-person fee was required to access La Dent. In the interest of continued access, the wishes and customs of the local community should be respected.
