Within 30 mins drive of the city of Kunming, XiaoMuoYuDong or Little Dark Rain Cave is well suited for a day visit if you happen to be in or near the city. The cave itself faces north and is very sheltered, making it both a shelter from the heat in the summer and a dry spot in the rain (though too much continuous rain can result in seepage). The climbs are mostly on steep overhang with good tufas, making it ideal for those interested in pulling hard on good holds, and double kneebaring (kneepads essential for the harder climbs) for those photogenic hands off rest. Unfortunately this also makes it not as friendly for beginner climbers (though outside the cave there are a few polished less steep routes).
Reaching the cave is relatively easy and cheap, take any taxi and point them to XiaoMuoYuDong, after getting into the village at some point you will be turning left down into a narrower path, insist on the driver taking you down there and soon you will arrive at a dead end with the cliff within sight and 5 mins walk (the taxi driver can make a U turn then). Public transport from Kunming is not an option and in any case the taxi is so cheap why would you bother?
Phone signal is very good in the cave.
