Crag features

After several years of closure, the Via Ferrata du Saix du Tour in Avoriaz was re-equipped and re-opened in September 2020.

~600m in length and ascending 173m to a finishing altitude of 2023m, the via is graded AD to D+.

The via starts with a long section of walking along a goat track atop the cliffs, amongst the avalanche defence structures. Eventually, the via begins to traverse the rock with a short AD section. A split is then reached to continue the route for a short section at either grade PD+ (short traversal and climb) or D+ (short overhang at the start). The routes then converge once more at an escape point. Continuing the traverse of the cliff is graded D+ and involves an airy monkey bridge (Pont de Vorlaz). After the bridge, the route rounds the corner and climbs up shortly to the exit.

The via is not as liberal as others in the region with availability of metal foot and handholds, often requiring the use of the cable or rock for holds. Regardless, it feels soft for the grade when compared with other vias in the region.

NOTE: The route is situated on a frequently avalanching cliff and should therefore NOT be attempted when there is any snow in the area.

Approach notes

The start of the Via is behind the Pierre & Vacances L'Hermine building at the North-East corner of the Avoriaz resort. From the top road of the resort, walk beneath a chairlift and then a bridge connecting the two buildings, where the cliff and Via will be in front of you.

As of October 2020, work is still ongoing (dismantling work?) on the old route further along the cliff. The start of the old route has a large red Fermé sign. If you find yourself here, follow the cliff along to the left (back towards resort) to find the start of the new route (literally next to the apartment building) which has a large information sign with the name of the Via.

In the summer season it is not possible to drive into Avoriaz, you can park outside (left at the roundabout) and walk up to the start, passing the golf driving range and La Folie Douce, stay on the highest road with buildings. In Autumn it may be possible to drive into the resort and park right next to the start of the route.

The starting board states a 3 hour round trip for the route (including descent back along the ridge and into resort), though at a steady pace without any queues it can easily be done in less than 2.

NOTE: The route is situated on a frequently avalanching cliff and should therefore NOT be attempted when there is any snow in the area.
