WARNING! This crag is incredibly dangerous and is on here for historical purposes only. Very loose rock!

(GR SE840948) "The Valley of Newton Dale runs to the north of Pickering, and the Whitby-Pickering railway passes through it. Flanking the valley ar some impressive bands of rock. The main one of these is best approaced by walking about 1 mile north-west from the rear of the inn at Saltergate on the Whitby-Pickering road. This brings one right over the of the crag, and the base can be reached by following the edge to the left until an easy track leads down into the valley by a small stream.

The Rocks reach a height of about 100ft and extend for 300 yards. The crag consists of narrow, horizontal bands of limestone separated by wide shatterd layers; there are large numbers of loose blocks everywhere, so the utmost care must be taken at all times." -- Anthony Marr - North York Moors 1970/73 guidebook.

The earlier 1961 "Climbs On The North York Moors" (M. F. Wilson) guidebook has a similar description.

The Inn at Saltergate mentioned has now been demolished (2019). A visit to the crag is on the list so updates to follow. Matt Pickering Aug 2019.
