Crag features

Excellent climbing area, cliffs from 15 to 60 m tall with beautifully featured and solid rock! Shame it's only warm enough to climb here for 2 or 3 months of the year!

This is a relatively new climbing area, though a few routes were set up in the 00's, it's said the person who found it didn't want others to come and spoil the secluded village of Norðurfjörður. There's little risk of that, the short climbing season and difficult road to the area mean that it's unlikely to attract the numbers that head to Hnappavellir in the south. Teams from the Icelandic Alpine Club have been making trips to equip routes in the area and in a few years this could be a premier climbing destination on the island.

Amenities: A lovely campsite in the village, a small local shop, small local cafe/restaurant, and the best swimming pool in Iceland at Krossneslaug (1000 kr).

There is plenty to do other than climbing. Hiking in the area is beautiful, and the isolated fjords and heath north of here are awesome areas for multi-day hikes. The area nearby is set to be flooded for a controversial hydro-power scheme: https://grapevine.is/mag/feature/2018/07/13/songs-of-the-dammed-hvalarvirkjun-and-the-future-of-arneshreppur/

Approach notes

Drive along a small road going west from the town. Parking can be found along the road beneath the cliffs, be careful of the bog and be considerate to other road users. Approach is around 5-10 mins to the main areas.
