Crag features
A pair of ornate, sandstone gateposts (presumably to the former parkland of the old village manor) in the far corner of an arable field. A salvation for any stranded climber in the woefully rockless county of Bedforshire, the posts feature surprisingly nice, short boulder problems:
a) Each of the sides have low fence holes or a base skirt for good sit starts b) Above the base skirt, eliminate the aretes &/or slapping around the sides, to make proper use of the brick edge crimps and high fence post holes c) Easy top-outs (also ideal design for dynos)
Landings are excellent, especially as there is enough space for a boulder mat without flattening the famer's crop! Being in the open, the crag will dry but I recommend leaving a day or so after rain to ensure that erosion is reduced on the sandstone 'rock'!
Summer is best time of year to go, since not only can you hide below the crop from the view of any passerbye, but you can also approach the crag from Clapham via the ford with a bike!
Approach notes
Approaching along Oakely Road, turn onto Lower Farm Road and drive about a mile (look for signs for Bromham Lake Nature Rerserve).
Park outside the gates of the Reserve and walk along the main path: when it splits, take the right most trail that runs adjacent to the field.
You should be able to see the posts through the tree line. Carefully climb over the small fence just before the bird hide, and walk along the tractor tracks to the posts.
Access Advice
Permission unknown: in a farmer's field ... so far I have not been approached by anyone!
Recommend going early morning or late evening, since you are visible from the reserve path and far hill on the other side of the field (naturally stay polite and leave if asked).
