The Bite is the short stretch of coast along the east side of the isthmus between Black Head and Gerrans Point. Looking north from Black Head it is obvious that there is some good deep clear water at the northern end of The Bite and it is this which provides the climber with two good short DWS traverses - superior in quality to Magellan's Lemon at nearby Gerran's Point (though that's damning them with faint praise really).
The rock is soapy in parts but largely solid. There's a curious dissonance to the stuff since it seems to be both slippery and sticky at once - it is generally fun climbing.
This stuff is about as obscure as it gets and unlike nearby Black Head, is not worth making the trip for The Bite alone. That said, it is a beautiful little stretch of calm coast on the glorious St Austell Bay and you'll most definitely have it to yourself, except maybe for the otter.
It is (with a bit of scrambling and beach walking and one or two short swims thrown in) possible to traverse this line of coast all the way from Black Head first via the route The Past is Close Behind, then via the routes at The Bite and finally to Gerran's Point and the circumnavigation of Magellan's Lemon, finally to ascend the cliff back to the coast path.
From the narrow neck of land as you approach Black Head, head left (east) facing out, down one of the fisherman's paths and descent to the shoreline. Head back north to find the various traverses in succession along the coast.
