Crag features

A lovely setting, the rock is generally sound and well protected dolerite with sturdy steel stakes at the top for belays. Add to this that you are climbing on a hill steeped in borders history. Being mainly in the lower grades, many of the routes have a nice flow to them. Doing them all in a single visit would not be too arduous and would give a satisfying outing. The downside is that the crag can often be covered in furry lichen. Some of the routes can also feel escapable and there is a lot of good scrambling on the crag.
Historically the crag has been climbed on for many years and the rusty (but solid) steel stakes were probably put in when it was used by the local eduction authority, with lots of local school children getting their first experience of climbing on this crag. The routes were first recorded and named by Graham Little in 2017 it was further explored by Micheal Haywood and Davey Battle and the local climbing club around the pandemic times and their enthusiasm has helped it gain more use recently.

Routes and names have now been updated (July 25) to reflect Lowland Outcrops guidebook (2023).

Approach notes

Park at the end of a forestry track opposite West Lees Farm. Take care not to obstruct the track. Room for 2 cars. Follow the track uphill until signposted left towards Ruberslaw. Follow the path through this section of woodland up the side of the deer fencing and then at the corner turn left across a couple of fields until the crag comes into view.
