Crag features

A rare outcrop of sandstone in the Peak which, despite being small, offers a number of possibilities in the softer grades. The rock still has a soft sandy layer, is fairly green, and no doubt suffers seepage after prolonged periods of rain. All landings are good but quickly drop away down a slope, so bring a spotter for anything high!

Approach notes

The crag is best approached from Grindleford, where parking can be found by following New Road as far as the main sharp corner at the top of the hill. Here a walled footpath leads off to the right, which can be followed up into the woods for 5 minutes. Once in the woods, the rock is soon visible to the right of the path.

Alternatively, a 15 minute approach is possible from the Eyam end of New Road by parking courteously just before the road closure railings. Head briefly back towards the centre of the village before turning a sharp right up Riley Lane. Follow the lane, turning right at the fork signed for ‘Top Riley’ and, once past the graves, right again down the byway. Pass the dirt jumps and turn right at the crossroads down the footpath, not straight ahead down the restricted byway. The footpath soon opens out and the small sandstone outcrop is visible on the left.

Note that although New Road is now impassable due to landslips, it is open as far as our needs require.
