Crag features

A collection of limestone crags around Granity Pass on Mount Owen

This is an alpine environment on a variety of limestone from clean friction slabs to large overhanging multipitch climbs

Granity Pass hut is a great place to be based while climbing in the area. It is a popular 12 bunk DOC hut with a water tank and toilet and is close to most of the crags.

see the Mount Owen Rock Climbs Guidebook for individual crag details.

For Sanctuary Dome and some other climbs around granity pass a 70-80m rope may be more useful as they have routes with pitches over 30m.

Approach notes

The Trail starts from Courthouse Flat carpark and campsite in Kahurangi National park. To get there turn off the SH61 at Tapawera turning onto Bushend Road and Wangapeka River road to the end. It is a gravel Road with a ford crossing which can be impassable after heavy rain.

From the trail start follow the track to Granity Pass Hut which takes 4-6 hours. It is a steep track.

Staircase Crag is en route to the hut on the left after the steep section of downhill called the staircase.
