Crag features

Only able to climb when the level of the lake has dropped enough which is normally during mid summer. The Rock is very clean due to being submerged for 9 months of the year and the landings are good (with a mat). Also known as the Lost Boulders of Atlantis!

2020 UKC thread noted: "The consensus was that all the boulders are out when the level is 10m, though a lot of climbing is possible at say 11.7m."

Access Advice

There has been a landslide and the minor road on the west side of the resevoir is closed to cars entirely. It's possible to park on the north side of the A591 and walk in (

https://maps.app.goo.gl/NZd8NF5D2AeFx8xf7) which takes ~50 mins. The signs suggest that it's not possible to walk in from the south.

There is now access to Armboth car park via the northern road (dam road is still closed). This reduces walk-in to about 15 mins: https://www.unitedutilities.com/cumbria-archive/our-plans/west-cumbria/thirlmere-reservoir---safety-information/

@Chris Fisher I think you've filed the Armboth Boulder info in the wrong place, Chris. The Marlin boulder is down on the lake shore. The boulder in your topo photos is up the hill opposite the Armboth car park. It was described by Alfred Wainwright as the "W Boulder" many years ago, but "Armboth Boulder" sounds fine to me. Great cleaning job btw!

Boulders are all out apart from the east side of the lowest boulders. Reservoir level at 10m, so needs to be lower for those problems.

Got down there and though the Whale was still partially under water these boulders are worth a look as they are not far off the road and are mostly unavailable. Nice clean rock to
