La Maya is the "Close Encounters" style pillar overlooking the east side of the Val d'Herens. It is approximately 100m high, and offers 3 multiptch routes (4 pitches or so), with bolt belays.
Rock is ok, but there are gravelly ledges at regular intervals.
Take the road up through St Martin, continuing up towards the roadhead past Aplage de Loveignoz (parking). Follow signs for Pas de Lovegno, then continue up the ridge Southwards to the base of the N ridge of La Maya. (800m of ascent, 2hrs?).Traverse round under the west face until you reach a scree slope. The path climbs this to a large cairn atop a butress on the right.
Descent is a 4 pitch abseil down the W face. Chains are located a couple of metres south of the summit cross (which is at the N end of the summit ridge)
