Crag features

Located in Öræfi, Hafrafell offers a good quality basalt boulder with plenty of lines on, as well as many other smaller boulders with potential for new problems.

The largest boulder is called Blóðsteinninn (The Bloodstone). The Bloodstone is a single boulder next to the parking lot at Hafrafell by the Svínafellsjökull glacier. The boulder is good quality basalt while most of the other boulders in the area are poor quality tuff. However, be careful on the easy problems facing away from the car park, as tourists checking out the glacier have been known to use the shelter from the boulder to relieve themselves there.

Hafrafell is part of the Öræfi page on klifur.is (https://www.klifur.is/crag/oraefi), which contains pictures of Blóðsteinninn.

Approach notes

The boulders of Hafrafell are only a minute walk from the closest car park, located at 64.0083, -16.8800. This car park can be reached from the Svinafellajokulsvegur road, however this road can be blocked off from the main road. Despite this, it is still possible to drive off-road for a few metres, to regain access to the road leading to the closest car park. Alternatively, cars can be left at the small car park on the main road (located at 64.00589, -16.92819), from which 2.5km can be walked on the flat road.

It is also possible to park at the Svínafellsjökull car park (64.00006, -16.89379), and follow a flat path north for 500m, before joining the Svinafellajokulsvegur road for another 1km. Various boulders are along the flat path north from this car park, although they are all very low quality tuff.
