Crag features

A crag of very featured and folded mica schist seawashed and concave in its lower 2 or 3 m and then off vertical for a further 5m or so above. All the interesting climbing lies on the clean compact lower portion.
It is perfectly possible to traverse at will above the lower protion or to continue up the wall to the top but there is no access to the base of the crag from the top and you would be commited to reverse this somewhat highball and lichenous ascent (about hard severe) . It makes much more sense to terminate problems when the traverse line is reached and either jump off onto the shingle or traverse to and descend the "Quartz" problem.
The problems were all first ascended in the 1990s in the days before mats but it should be noted that the pebbly base is not always reliably there so a mat and /or spotter would be helpful if climbing above uneven exposed rocks on the right hand side of the crag.

The name of the crag "Springwell" was used by the local salmon fisherman, the late Mr Peter Campbell, who fished the bay for many years and refers to the 3m long flooded dripping cave which you find if you follow the edge of the crag back away from the sea and up into the trees

Approach notes

Grid Reference NR 798 361
At Torrisdale Bay on the B842 between Campbeltown and Carradale.Park at the obvious large layby at the bay about 120m North of the bridge over the river entering the bay at its south end. Space for several cars.
Go down onto the bay and turn left (north) for picking your way easily over a small rocky spur separating the main sandy bay from a smaller pebbly bay. Crag is immediately obvious. Only about 100m from the layby. Less than 5 minutes.
