Beautifully situated col, a good point to plot the route up the Rateau and a worthwhile trip in its own right. Can be linked with the Col and Dome de la Lauze for a short and sweet day. Conditions will determine which approach is safest. If taking the PD slope to the left of the rock island, try and arrive before the snow is too soft, although it is short (20 odd metres), poor conditions can turn a ploddy 40° snow slope into a 45/50° ice climb, as you are forced to dig into the steeper ice beneath. Consider belaying the steep section if in doubt (up and down), as a slip could take you in the the Bergshrund or 100 metres back down the glacier.
45 minutes from the 3200 station to the Rimaye, 20 minutes Rimay to Col.
