Crag features

Rock is 'Gres Amoricain' - a hard grey sandstone unique to this area.

Le Grande Barre is one of a series of 5 crags with a total of 171 sport bolted climbs all in close proximity that form La Fosse Arthour. The crag ranges from a few metres high to 23 metres. Some of the routes have recently been rebolted (July 2020).

La Fosse (a lake) is surrounded by a number of footpaths which offer easy access to all of the climbs (max walk in is about 10 minutes)

Full up-to-date (and very colourful) topos can be found on the Mortain climbing club website here: https://escaladesurlemorta.wixsite.com/grimpemortain/grimpe-en-exterieur (available for a short time for free in 2020, you may have to pay for these now).

Alternatively, you can find the original guidebook from 1992 for free here - http://toutenhaut.com/les-topos-oublies/ )

Approach notes

La Fosse Arthour is located between Domfront and Mortain in Lower Normandy.

>From Domfront take the D907 towards Mortain. About a third of the way to Mortain (just prior to St Georges De Rouelley) La Fosse Arthour is signposted off the D907 (right turn).

Park at the Auberge Cafe / Restaurant / Pub and take the short walk in to one of the 5 crags. (The Auberge is closed and up for sale 29/10/16).
