Engineer's Slabs © petesdavies
A superb high mountain crag with excellent views looking over Ennerdale and Buttermere. The centrepice of the crag is the 90m high steep slab which sits in the middle of the north face. The crag needs a good dry spell and is sometimes referred to as the Lakes' coldest crag (see winter guide). Snicker Snack (E3), The Tomb (E2), Engineer's Slabs (VS) and Jabberwock (HVS) are the most popular summer routes. Currently home of the Lakes' hardest winter route - Snicker Snap (VIII 9).
One and a half hour walk from Honister Pass via Moses Trod. Can also be appraoched from Wasdale Head or from Blacksail Hut in Ennerdale.
The main slab is best approached up an intially obscured shallow gully from the right. The grass is steep and the rock is often green so care should be taken getting up to the base. When leaving, some parties choose to abseil the first bit of the descent, which can be done from a block right of the main slab or from a thread positioned in the base of Engineer's Chimney.
|As far as I can recall the walk in is very amenable.|
