Pilot Mountain North Carolina © swampy
A short but very accessible cliff offering sweeping views southwards across the plains of North Carolina. The rock is composed of quartzite and is mostly bullet hard but with occasional chossier sections. A lot of the lines were originally trad routes, but the popularity and easy access is leading to a prolonged bolting effort that is steadily increasing the number of sport options.
Pilot Mountain is a great place to introduce beginners to outdoor climbing because of the plentiful easy climbs and accessibility to set up top-ropes. It can therefore be busy on sunny weekends and is also shared with hikers - please take care not to block the trail that runs along the bottom of the cliff.
Drive to the parking lot at the top of Pilot Mountain. The sections of the crag where climbing is permitted start on the walls below the parking lot and run westwards (away from the main peak). Walk in times vary from 5 to 15 minutes depending on which section you are aiming for.
You must fill out a permit, which can be found at the parking lot beneath a climber's information board. Climbing on the prominent Pilot Mountain knob is not permitted.
