Crag features

A collection of crags dotted over the fellside close to the ferocious bouldering venue of The Bowderstone. This group of crags caters for all climbing tastes. Woden's Face is a popular small crag located just above the valley floor. It is sheltered and has plenty of lower and mid-grade climbs and is popular with groups. In total contrast, the jutting prow of Hell's Wall is home to some of the area's finest extreme climbs. There are also a couple of decent climbs on the two outlying pinnacles.

Approach notes

All the crags are approached from the Bowderstone National Trust carpark (fee).

Woden's Face - From the carpark payment meter, take the path a short way down to the road and then up past an old quarry. After 150m, Woden's Face can be seen just off the path on the left.

Hell's Wall and Bowderstone Pinnacle - From the carpark payment meter, take the path a short way down to the road and then up past an old quarry and Woden's Face. 20m before the huge Bowderstone boulder is reached (after about 230m total), take an indistinct path up the steep hillside, slightly left at first and then back rightwards over boulders and scree to below the crags. Woden's Needle and Hell's Wall are on the left and Bowderstone Pinnacle is on the right.

We did Wodens Face Direct and Wodens Groove.Nice clean rock if a bit polished. On the pleasant September Sunday theplace was empty so it may be worth bearing in mind as an alternative to Brown Slabs. sjm
