Chalet du Soldat from Gastlosen © Mike Meysner

Crag features

The impressive limestone towers in the Gastlosen offer a wealth of pocket pulling and crimpy edged face climbs. There are many routes both on the north and south facing sides of the ridge, the south side offering the best of the "Plaisir" routes. The classic traverse at the north end is not to be forgotten. A fantastic area.

The definitive guidebook is Gastlosen.ch, ca.800 routes, which is useful compared to Plaisir West as it gives more mid-grade cragging options, e.g. the sector Réservoir near the Chalet du Soldat, and Aligné-Couvert not much further away. Extrem West has a good selection of the harder routes.

In the UKC logbook the "buttresses" on the northwest side are given left to right (north to south), while the buttresses on the southeast side are given right to left (north to south). Climbs within buttresses are given left to right in both cases.

Approach notes

The Chalet du Soldat offers a base near the main area on the north side, accessed with a drive up from the valley to Petit Mont or Sattel and a 40min walk, the nearest climbs being only 10mins further on (sector Resevoir).

The climbs on the south side at the Pfadflue can be reached from the Chalet in about an hour, or else from parking at Oberi Bire or Oberberg with a 30 or 45min walk respectively.
