Deer Knowl scramble in winter condition © pec
A minor moorland outcrop of reasonably clean, well-weathered grit up to 9m high, about ½ mile W of Shining Clough Rocks (if you fancy a change.) Best routes are Deer Hunter (HVS 5a), The Smear Hunter (E2 6a) and Delilah (E4 5c).
The most direct route to the crag is as follows:- from the parking, go through the big gates and turn left. Go along there for about 50yds before climbing over a gate to follow a track up the hillside. After about 20 minutes or so (not accurate!) a path branches off left near or at a RH bend in the track, and near a gnarled upright post/log. Follow that until it fades oput somewhere below the crag, and then just strike up the hillside to the crag itself. If you follow the track and get to the turning circle you've gone about 300 yds too far.
