Me on good ice in Blea Water Gill (III), Mardale, Lake District © Jamie Moss
A number of good winter routes form after a few days of freezing weather. Predominantly ice climbing. Blea Water Gill is a district classic and deceptively long, While Birkett's Gully also proves attractive.
Park at the head of Hawsewater and approach via the Blea Water Tarn path. About an hour. For descent most parties will head up to the summit and work rightwards, following the ridge until until a good path down the ridge to the north of the tarn can be followed back.
