The crag is Not in the MOD live firing range and can be accessed at all times! The Red flag and sign are a little confusing but if read properly it states that the closed area is actually 3km further along the track. Access to the crag is therefore not affected.
A fierce but minor outcrop on the ridge above Brough and after local discussion has been retro bolted so hopefully it will get more attention. The situation is delightful, the routes short but pack in quite a punch. Many of the routes previously relied heavily on insitu threads for protection and are still visible.
Loose rock is still to be found so take care and wear a helmet.
Topo available on the FRCC Web site.
In the village of Brough take the road signed Helbeck Quarry and follow the road uphill to park at the quarry entrance, making sure not to block access. Continue on foot up the track past the entrance to a small quarry by a big tree. Pass the tree and follow the faint path under several broken buttresses before heading up to the main buttress. 20mins.
The climbs seem to have one tough section and the easier finishes. The grades appear closer to bouldering grades than route grades. RD - 02/Sep/24 |
