Crag features

The most comprehensive and up-to-date information available can be found at https://castlehillbasin.co.nz/ - including topos, approaches, and cleaning ethic. An account is needed but it's free and well worth it.

The boulder fields can easily be seen from the road. Terrain is easy, you will do perfectly well in Tevas. There are two toilets, one in the carpark, the other is situated at the back of Quantum Field. There are NO rubbish bins.

You need to:

Bring a water spray bottle and soft brush for cleaning problems

Bring your own food, water, toilet paper

Carry your own rubbish out

Be wary of old slammer bolts with chain link hangers. They have been there since the 80's

Do not:
- Upset the stock
- Leave huge tick marks
- Use a wire brush
- Use Pof

Approach notes

Castle Hill is found about 100km west of Christchurch on SH73. Springfield is the last stop for food/coffee/fuel before reaching the boulders, about another 15-20 minutes up the road. On the way home, stop in at the Springfield pub for a Duff.

The area most know as "Castle Hill" actually consists of a number of boulder fields, the largest of which are Spittle Hill which is on your left as you enter the gate and Quantum Field, directly ahead of you as you walk down the track. Lesser fields are The Dark Castle, over the shallow valley to the right of Quantum, and Wuthering Heights, on the sky line.

Access to all of these fields is via a flat track from the tourist parking.
