Scout Crag © Chris Ebbutt

Crag features

Easy to access slabby limestone crag that catches the sun and provides good views across Torbay.

The crag is a small quarry cut into the side of a steep hill, on top of which sits St Michael's Chapel which is estimated to have been built during the 13th to 14th century. The location is perfectly suited for beginners and groups thanks to the easy access, safe top outs and slabby low grade climbs. Also some opportunities for abseils, boulder problems and long traverses although there are no multi pitch routes.

Before clearance work began in early 2015 there was only one good route and abseil available which was used mainly by Scout groups from around Torbay however since all the leafy soil has been removed from the rest of the rock, plenty of new routes are now exposed

Approach notes

By Car: Free roadside parking on Barton Road near Torre Primary School. Enter the woods by following the footpath opposite the school's playing field, when you reach the start of the woods follow the left track towards the Chapel and top of the crag.

By Bus/Train: From Torre Railway station cross the road and head left until you reach a path into the woods, then just head up the hill until you can see the bottom of the crag

-The Chapel is a 13th-14th century listed building and currently (March 2015) undergoing extensive restoration therefore using any of the building and supporting features as an anchor is a strict taboo.

@chudders any details on routes/grades/who did it?

Did "Slippery Crack" on top rope which is fine. Then I tried "Stumpy ArÍte" which is VERY loose, whole flakes coming off in my hands and needs a good brush to clear the moss! I'll have a go cleaning it up when I get a chance.

Crumbly and dirty, dangerous.

Climbed 'Chapel Slide' (agree with V0 grade) and 'Bishop's Finger' (would give that Diff). Good potential on Scout Crag, happy to help clean it up if anyone else fancies it

Except "Slippery Crack" all climbs are new so any feedback on grades is much appreciated, also if you're climbing here early 2015 take care when leading as the rock hasn't settled from having the trees ripped out in February
