3143m. The classic route up the highest peak in the Maritime Alps. Take the GR52 route up from the Madone de Fenestre (well signposted from St Martin-Vesubie) and after a number of switchbacks you find yourself beneath a very large boulder. At this point, take the obvious track off to the right and head up (very steeply at first) to the first well-placed cairn. From here, plot a course roughly NNE, guided by regular cairns (and an occasional path). The objective of Cime de Gelas is obvious. Once at the base of the peak's crags, continue to the east until you reach a shoulder where views of Italy unfold. Skirt round the foot of the east ridge, a more challenging climb, and head roughly WSW. Shortly, the east couloir should be in sight. Head straight up, watching out for rock fall, until you reach the top. You're then faced with a relatively straightforward scramble over steep ground to the summit.
