Crag features

There is a lot of rock in the valley above Cowside Beck including Yew Cogar Crag. Downstream of this is an area of walls and buttresses that are part of the greater Yew Cogar Crags. The current development is to be found on the lower wall at the left-hand end of the crags and avoids exits into the forest using bolted lower-offs.  The rock is good quality limestone on the lower three bands.  Above a high break, the rock is quite shattered so the climbs finish at the break running across the cliff

Approach notes

The old Yew Cogar approach follows the Malham road uphill from Arncliffe and reaches parking places where the road emerges from its retaining walls.  From here, a diagonal descent of the very steep hillside goes down to the river and a paddle/crossing point depending on the river level.  In late summer this descent can be made more difficult by areas of luxuriant bracken. An alternative is to park by the first barn after leaving Arncliffe. Walk up the road a short way and enter a field through a gate. Descend diagonally to the river.  From here a vague path runs up the valley to the same crossing point.  The first part of this approach, across the field, is not on access land.
