Crag features

A small crag of good quality gritstone at the southern edge of the Chatsworth estate, reaching a height of nearly 9m and featuring some fine Cratcliffesque flutings. The crag is briefly mentioned on page 311 of the current BMC Froggatt To Black Rocks guide at the end of the Rabbit Warren section. At the top of the main crag are some old metal fixings and holes. These are the remains of the ‘Duke's Seat’ which was built as a view point for the Duke of Devonshire but has since been destroyed (hence the name given to the crag – it is not marked on the OS25 White Peak map).

The crag had a bouldering renovation in Spring 2017 to give a fine circuit of problems.

Good topo here.

Approach notes

Park by Hell Bank Plantation (OS Ref SK 287681) and walk NW along the good track, over the top of Rabbit Warren bouldering, and into the Chatsworth woods. Cross a small bridge and turn left onto a green track. Follow this as it bends round to the right and passes near the top of the crag (marked by a few rocks).

Approach time: 30 mins

No Access Issues

Do not descend into the woods below the crag - these are private
