Granticus and South Devon team on the megaboard at Glenthorne © NatureMercenary

Crag features

Remote, secluded bouldering by the sea, far from the madding crowds.Free standing boulders, caves and some short butresses.

Most well known for The Megaboard, a large steep 'board' style face on the underside of the Giant's Rib and more recently 'The Hollow'/ 'The Shallow' cave (another steep board inside a cave).

Approach notes

BEWARE OF THE TIDE. Although there are safe places to retreat from an incoming tide you will have to wait if you get cut off! Check the tide times before going, be there around low tide, keep an eye on the incoming sea and if in doubt walk out! The cut off point is near the first boulders.

The easiest approach is from the car park at County Gate on the A39. 'The Ramblers Rest' is here if you need to charge up with a cream tea (and there are public toilets).

Cross the main road near the car park entrance and pass through the gate opposite. Follow the footpath heading east towards Yenworthy Lodge, past a big wood pile (present at time of writing), take the left path soon after (sign posted for Glenthorne/ Coast Path), head straight downwards, this is an obvious wide forestry track going down past a recently felled plantation. Continue downwards through a gate until the next junction is reached then turn right (signposted Yenworthy Combe). You will start to enter into a mixed woodland. Continue downwards until you reach another junction at a stream crossing. Don't cross the stream, turn left downhill, following the path by the stream (sign posted Glenthorne Beach). You are now in the Glenthorne Estate, you will pass the 'ice house' and a fish pool on the way down. At the next junction follow a smaller footpath down to beach level (signposted Beach). This walk down will take ~30 mins at a steady pace. The length of the walk back up to the car park at 323m above sea level will depend on how fit and strong your legs are!

Pebble hop westwards for about 5 mins, the first boulders are around the corner just past the (private) steps down from Glenthorne House. 'Where the Wild Things Are' boulder is the obvious large seaward boulder, the small steep overhang just before this contains 'Bear Necessities', the deeper low cave contains 'Turtle Head' etc. 5 mins further pebble hopping westwards will get you to 'The Hollow' cave, another 5 mins will get you to The Giant's Rib containing the 'Megaboard' and another 7 mins ish further west is the 'Painted Wall'.

No Access Issues

BEWARE OF THE TIDE! Although there are safe places to retreat from an incoming tide you will have to wait if you get cut off! Check the tide times before going, be there around low tide, keep an eye on the incoming sea and if in doubt walk out! The tid moves fast in the Bristol Chanel. The cut off point is near the first boulders.
