Halton Heights - The Quantum Leap (J1) © craig h

Crag features

The hillside is sprawling with both natural and quarried gritstone. Despite being underrated and unloved for years, the quarries provide plenty of good arête, wall and crack climbing on quick-drying south-facing rock just minutes from the road. Sporadic cleaning over the years has unearthed some classic gems but most lines will no doubt need a robust clean before a return to active service. More recently, the bouldering has been developed and the area now hosts hundreds of problems.

The rock is variable, ranging from solid to friable. Seepage can be an issue after heavy rain. Expect heather to be where you want to put your hands. There are plenty of good stake belays at the top of the crag.

Good topo here.

UPDATE 2023. Most of the routes on the left side of the Lower Quarry have been cleaned over 2022/2023, get them while they are fresh. In addition two bolt loweroffs have been added to many of these routes and so you don't have to do the gripping heathery topouts if that is not your thing. Full topos for the main quarry ar presented in the photos for the crag.

Approach notes

The majority of the climbing is accessed by following the path up the fell wall leftwards to gain the right-hand end of the Lower Quarry.

Approach time: 5 mins
