Hang Hill Quarry © tractorbachcoch

Crag features

A small Sandstone quarry in Bream in the Forest of Dean. Comprehensively developed since the last CC guide, but mostly in poor condition due to tree cover and neglect. There are a few clean routes that offer fierce mid-Extreme wall climbing and are worth more attention.

Approach notes

Behind the village of Bream. Turn east at the cross roads next to the school in village centre, take first right and follow to path opposite bungalows.

The diminutive southernmost crags hosting 'Tree Roots' and other low grade problems can be accessed by a small but obvious dirt path branching off left of the main path 50 or so meters from the entrance of the forest.

The main face hosting the excellent 'Hang em High' can be accessed by climbing over the (unfortunately) flattened fence 100 meters into the forest and scrambling down the manufactured steps and slope. The arena, which hosts Weird Fish wall, is easily accessed by walking north from the main face over or round steep mounds.

Lots of tree fall over last couple of months. Fallen tree covering most of the Weird fish wall. I was developing some boulder routes but treefall has ripped off the whole face. Hang 'em high quarry not effected

Worth a visit if you are local to the area. The first eight routes are in the far more open and sunny of the two quarries.Hang 'em High is the obvious and brilliant arete,Hanging Out is worth doing. The second quarry is far more enclosed and in the trees,it gets very little of the sun as a result,it would probably be quite wet in the winter or soon after wet weather. The routes on the Wierd Fish Wall are all good and like the South Wales sandstone.Hung Drawn And Quartered and Dead Souls are also worth seeking out.
