Rocktype Sandstone (hard)
Altitude 12m a.s.l
Faces NW

Crag features

Portishead’s charming band of sandstone lies just 500m southwest of the Lake Grounds. Rising an almighty 3m, vertigo is unlikely to prove an issue unless somehow you find yourself on the overlying red tot of the Portishead Beds. Most of the cliff is underlain by pebbles, even a nominal beach at times – meaning you can leave your mat at home. Many problems involve banning some holds, a modern notion that can get very irritating indeed.

It is a sea-cliff in name only and only spring tides or big seas will get your feet wet.

The cliff faces west-northwest, dries super-fast, and is idyllic (and peaceful) during spring to autumn.

Approach notes

1/ Park in Kilkenny Fields (free council car park) but a) the car park closes at 8pm, b) it is only open Easter to the end of September. From the car parking and picnic tables follow the coast path SW to  the Fishermen’s Steps, and then return NE along a boulder and pebble beach to the crag. The drier way but roiugh underfoot.

2/ Park  in the Lake Grounds on the sea front near the Lakeside Cafe (free), and head to the southwestern end of the ‘esplanade’. Vanish down the man-made wall (useful hole from missing block; hard without), and tip-toe along its base until a damp, even soggy, path in the reeds become evident. Follow this and the beach in five minutes to your destination. Only the highest spring tides or a winter’s deluge will preclude access this way. Wellies advised.

There are easiler ways down the Esplanade Wall in the centre of the beach. Note this is not a beach as you expect, see warning signs.
