Crag features

Mount Korab is the highest point of both Macedonia and Albania at 2764m. Composed mostly of shale and limestone, with an alpine environment inhabited by local shepherds with their (aggressive) dogs. Bears also inhabit the woods at the start of the climb. Nevertheless a beautiful mountain ridge with several close peaks over 2700m.

Approach notes

Korab can be accessed from both the Albanian and Macedonian side, although the Macedonian seems to be more accessible with better connections (flights to Skopje or Ohrid then train/car). A permit to enter from Macedonia is no longer required but a National Park pass at a cost of 40 dinar (2021) can be bought from the tourist centre in Marovi Hanovi. Border guards are unlikely to be visible at the police post and if they are, they are unlikely to bother you.

From Mavrovi Anovi, drive further till village Trnica 8km or so from Mavrovi Anovi. At Trnica after 1.5km turn right and off the main Gostivar-Debar road, wave goodbye to the asphalt and say hello to the unpaved carriage road and progress northwards toward the village of Nichpur. From the turning it takes around 13km of bumpy, winding road till sharp left bound curve beneath Strezimir watchtower. A high clearance vehicle is helpful. Leave your car at the white watchtower building at 1464m. The ascent to Mount Korab is very well marked with red and white flashes and new (2021) 2m poles on the higher part of the mountain. The first 2km is through a wood, bears are present and come this way to the river. 25km round trip from the Strezimir watchtower to the summit and back. 1400m ascent in total with a small part of losing height midway up the route. Water is available at around 2500m from a good stream, the route goes beside it for a short distance. It is very well marked and straightforward even in poor visibility. 4-5 hours to the main summit.

The Mavrovo national park has several accomodation options, with mostly simple family run hotels or bed and breakfasts. There are a couple of restaurants and very small shops to restock on food.

No Access Issues

None. But driving to Strezimir watchtower requires a determined approach on very poor roads. Takes 45 minutes to drive 13km
