The Lower Grugog Buttresses are the lower sets of buttresses that run across the hillside into Grugog Gully from above the right (south) edge of the Gorlan boulders plateau. The climbing interest is divided between two sectors: the Gorlan Buttresses (Left, Chapter, Steep and Right), which lie above the first part of the approach and the Grugog Ribs (Magnetic and Electrostatic) which are two prominent clean ribs further up and right on the north (left) flank of Grugog Gully. The ribs are easily picked out from the A5 as clean ridges that slant down from left to right. Each is easy-angled at the top but with steeper rock, which provides the main climbing interest, at the base.
Start up the Gorlan (Sheep Pen) boulders track. Where it bears left, continue straight on up a stony rib and then a depression left of the main scree until it is possible to traverse diagonally to and across a tall, narrow island of heather surrounded by the scree. Cross the top of the next, more rocky, island and up to the boundary between scree and heather (about 25 min from car park). This is the foot of the Gorlan Buttresses sector: the individual buttresses run both left and right from here. For the Grugog Ribs continue up and right in steps for another 10 to 15 min, mostly following the boundary between scree and heather.
