FA The Titanic Arete E3 5c Moss Rigg Quarry ,Little Langdale © USBRIT

Crag features

This huge quarry has been extensively developed as a sport climbing venue over the past couple of years (now around 30 sport routes (5+ to 7b), some of the highest quality. There is very little here to offer the trad climber). There are currently 6 main climbing areas, several facing south/south east, very sheltered and fast drying. The quarry still has some areas of unstable rock and often loose boulders/scree under foot.  Care is needed.

A complete, up to date mini guide is available as a free download from the FRCC website (see link below).  This is highly recommended, if only for the photo-diagrams and finding your way around!

A recently developed venue which has some unstable rock and is difficult to get around. Despite this there are a plethora of routes to choose from, with routes from 5+ to 7b, it holds something for most. One of the Lake District's tallest sport venues at 56 metres on its tallest route Heart of the Ocean 7a+ 30.08.2023  P Whillance, K Phizacklea.

A sheltered crag with all aspects, a really excellent venue, the quarry is full of loose boulders and there is some instability in the rock with it being a recently developed slate quarry.

This crag can be accessed from tilberthwaite or little langdale in around 30 minutes. It is also very sheltered so makes a great wet weather option.

Approach notes

Walk in from tilberthwaite, follow the road past all of the farm buildings, pass through the gate and take the laft path. Follow this off road cycle route towards Atkinson Coppice and little langdale. After walking up hill the path levels out. Look out for a foot path towards the wall and woods to the right. Follow this til you cross a broken wall then look out for an opening in the wall with a short wooden fence. The crag is infront of you, abseil into two aretes area or follow the crag around to the left till you find a steep access path with a handline.

Actually the two routes in this quarry The Titanic Arete E3 5c and Borrowdale Lads Day Out E2 5c are as good as any trad slate climbs .
