Crag features

The granite slabs located beneath the Moors castle offer some spectacular climbing with beautiful views over the surrounding landscapes.

In order to enjoy Penedo with good friction, it is best to make use of the morning shade during the hottest days of summer and the afternoon sun during cold winter days.

Approach notes

It was previously possible to drive up the road from Sintra's old-town towards the Castelo dos Mouros and access the cliffs from a convenient parking spot, but the road is now closed to general traffic (the bus is still running). Therefore cars need to be parked back in Sintra and walk up one of the paths through the woodland. The main path is signposted to the Castelo and winds up very pleasantly through the grounds of Villa Sassetti to pass below the cliffs. Or catch the bus to the castello and approach down the hill from there .

The top section of Estrada Da Pena, the road to the Moorish Castle, is now privatised and you can no longer park there. Moreover a lot of the parking in Sintra maxes out at 4 hours (unless you can find an appropriate side road with free parking). The best bet is to take a train to Sintra, then take an Uber/taxi from Sintra up to the Moorish Castle, then walk from there.

Park on the Estrada da Pena, use the topo at http://www.gmesintra.com/topos/imagens/sintra/sintra.pdf (much better than the one listed above). Climbing is exposed granite route, relying lots on pure friction. Great views!
