Crag features

A good single monolith in a well-cleared and idyllic area of the Galloway forest. Good lines (despite crouching starts) but very coarse rock. Do not go anywhere near it unless there's a breeze or cloud cover, it's the hottest suntrap in Scotland.

Details taken from Roddy Mackenzie's Blog @

Very quick drying.

Approach notes

Park on the A712 between New Galloway and Newton Stewart at the carpark marked "Talnotry". This is car park immediately after the "Grey Mare's tail" car park when heading West, which itself is immediately after the Wild Goat Park.

Cross the road and head down the forestry road situated about 50metres to the East of this car park. Cross the bridge and park at the junction just after the big slab. Watch this vid to find best path.  Wellies advised

Took a bit a jungle bashing to get through and find, grid ref NX 487 571. Uneven underfoot to say the least. Area around the boulder is still clear.

Unfortunately the forest is now returning and it's really difficult to push through the new growth and actually get to the boulder. Would not recommend unless you bring a chainsaw

A really good sized block, an excellent find. Worth calling in for if your in the area.
