Scout Hut, the Switzerland of grit crags; so small and yet it packs much majestic climbing into its tiny territory. The crag is home to a finger-ripping bouldering circuit and some top-drawer highballing. Most of the blocks are centred around half a dozen blocks and buttresses only a short distance from the parking. Those who continue to contour west will find a smattering of boulders scattered over the best part of a mile.
The crag is south-facing and can be climbed on all year round. It is quick-drying and is a good candidate to be in condition when all the other Calderdale crags are wet.
When approaching from Widdop the crag lies about 1 mile past the Widdop parking, shortly after the Pack Horse Inn. Park on the right in a large layby as the road starts to descend into Hardcastle Crags, or a short distance further on the hairpin bend.
Go over the stile and head west to a gate. Go through this and follow a well-trodden path right to the crag arriving at Pinch Block.
Please note that the Yorkshire Gritstone map reference is incorrect (which hopefully should be obvious from the guidebook description!). Map ref should be SD956313. Alex Thompson - 18/Jun/09 |
