Crag features

Home to some of the best slab pitches in the Lakes !! Of note are Lakeland Cragsman (HVS) and Aphasia (E2).

These fine slabs are slightly below and to the right of Sergeant Crag and can be reached in about 1 hour from Stonethwaite. Approach as for Bleak How but continue along the path to Gash Rock (a large boulder by the beck) and then strike directly up the hillside. The routes are on excellent rock and receive the afternoon and evening sun. The foot of the slab is gained by scrambling up to a narrow earthy ledge from the left.

Approach notes

Descent from the crag has been subject to a lot of debate over the last few years. Park at Stonethwaite. Walk up the valley on a road and then a track past a campsite, then turn right up the Langstrath Valley. After 200m, cross the river (at a footbridge). Walk up the left bank of the river (facing upstream) and after 1 mile, at a striking rock tower, locate a steep path that heads uphill to the crag (50 mins).

Pleased to see how nice and green and untrampled the vegetation is at the top of the crag, thanks to rap station. No need to erode the hillside.

Brilliant slab climbing. There is a brand new bolted ab station as of summer 2010. Don't know why, but there you go.

Walk off descent (to the R of the crag as you face it) is v straightforward. No need to ab down the routes.
