First ascent of Barney's Stormin' Arête , Stanhope's first sport route. © jeffmearns

Crag features

Southwest-facing sports crag on rough quarried limestone wlth routes up to 18m. The rock is characterised by the 'red light' - a technical seam near the top of most routes.

Some buttresses, such as Barneys and Thunderbirds hardly ever get very wet and dry quickly. Parts of Bamm-Bamm and Waterfall suffer from run off from the moors above and can take quite a time for all the routes to dry out fully.

Approach notes

Take the B6278 towards Crawleyside and, just before the bend, take the small dean road opposite the lorry escape lane.

Please park carefully before the new fence and gate or back up the road before the houses.

The quarry is off to the right of the road.

At most a 5 minutes walk to the buttresses along paths that will become more prominent.
